Postwatch, the UK's watchdog for the postal services industry, is to disband, with the majority of its staff made redundant, it has emerged.
The work of the supervisory group will be scaled down from Wednesday, October 1st and merged with energywatch and the National Consumer Council to form Consumer Focus, reports Hell Mail.
Millie Banerjee, chair of Postwatch said that the key players of the UK postal industry now face "interesting and turbulent times ahead" but acknowleged that users of postal service could now be adequately supported with the formation of the centralised body.
She also said that she hopes the forthcoming review of postal services in the UK will spur the government on to remedy a range of issues that are plaguing the industry including a pension fund deficit, declining mail volumes and poor industrial relations.
Steve Lawson, editor for Hell Mail, said: "It concerns me that with Royal Mail still losing money on the universal service and domestic mail services nowhere near as good as they once were, a one-size-fits-all centralised consumer body will lead to a weak and ineffective voice for domestic customers in the longer term."
